Huish Park was the stage for a surprising National League match, where York City triumphed over Yeovil Town with a 3-1 victory. While the scoreline may have favoured the visitors, York’s efficiency in front of goal ultimately proved decisive in a match filled with incident.
York City took the initiative in the first half, opening the scoring in the 25th minute when Ollie Pearce converted a penalty, awarded after a foul in the box which also resulted in a yellow card for Yeovil’s James Plant. The advantage was then doubled just nine minutes later, with Ollie Banks scoring from a Tyrese Sinclair assist.
Yeovil Town, struggling to gain momentum, made an early tactical adjustment in the 54th minute, substituting James Plant with Tahvon Campbell. Further changes followed in the 67th and 68th minutes as Harvey Greenslade was replaced by Aaron Jarvis, and Junior Morias made way for Ben Wodskou, as the home side searched for a way back into the contest.
York City responded with a double substitution of their own in the 71st minute, bringing on Ben Brooks for Tyrese Sinclair and Joe Grey for Ollie Banks. Byron Pendleton was also replaced by Finn Cousin-Dawson in the 72nd minute.
These substitutions appeared to galvanise Yeovil, and Luke McCormick reduced the deficit in the 77th minute, raising hopes of a comeback. However, those hopes were short-lived. Just six minutes later, a Jake Wannell own goal restored York’s two-goal lead, effectively securing the win for the Minstermen. Ollie Pearce was then replaced by Josh Stones in the 82nd minute.
The match also saw a number of yellow cards issued. Aaron Jarvis was cautioned for Yeovil in the 70th minute, while Hiram Boateng was booked for York City in the 76th minute. York City’s Alex Newby was replaced by Daniel Batty in the 78th minute.
The result sees York City move up the league table, while Yeovil Town remain in the lower half and will need to address their defensive weaknesses if they are to climb the ranks.
