Rochdale climbed the National League table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sutton United at the Crown Oil Arena. Emmanuel Dieseruvwe’s second-half strike proved decisive in a match where clear-cut chances were at a premium.
The first half was a tight affair, with neither side able to establish control. Rochdale were forced into an early change when Aidan Barlow was replaced by Connor McBride in the 41st minute, a tactical alteration perhaps indicating manager Jimmy McNulty’s desire for more attacking impetus. Sutton United, under the guidance of Steve Morison, also struggled to carve out meaningful opportunities, with the play frequently congested in midfield. At half-time, Sutton United introduced Jayden Harris, replacing Mo Dabre. The teams went into the break goalless, leaving the supporters hoping for a more exciting second half.
Rochdale began the second half with increased urgency, and their pressure eventually told in the 50th minute. Emmanuel Dieseruvwe found the net, assisted by Harvey Gilmour, giving the home side the lead. The goal injected life into the contest, compelling Sutton United to adopt a more attacking approach. However, they found Rochdale’s defence difficult to breach. Gilmour, having played a key role in the goal, received a yellow card in the 62nd minute for a foul.
Sutton United responded with a double substitution, bringing on David Ogbonna and Brandon Njoku in the 57th and 61st minutes respectively, in an attempt to revitalise their attack. Rochdale, however, remained organised and disciplined, restricting Sutton to long-range efforts. In the 73rd minute, Rochdale replaced Joe Pritchard with Tarryn Allarakhia, further strengthening their midfield.
As the game neared its conclusion, Sutton United pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Rochdale defended resolutely and looked to exploit the counter-attack, introducing Daniel Moss in the 87th minute in place of Devante Rodney. Sutton also made a late attacking change, bringing on Dillon De Silva. Rochdale also made a late substitution with Casey Pettit replacing Ryan East in the 86th minute. Despite late pressure from the visitors, Rochdale held on to secure the three points.
The victory lifts Rochdale to second place in the National League standings, with 12 points from their opening five matches. Sutton United, meanwhile, remain in 22nd position, still searching for their first win of the season with two points.
