Gateshead 0-3 Southend United

Southend United delivered a clinical performance at the Gateshead International Stadium, securing a 3-0 victory over Gateshead thanks to a dominant second-half display. The Shrimpers’ flurry of goals after the interval ultimately sealed the three points.

Southend made an immediate impact, with Sam Austin putting them ahead within the first three minutes. Gateshead struggled to establish themselves in the first half, and the early goal set the stage for a difficult afternoon.

The second half saw Southend emerge with renewed energy. Josh Walker extended their lead in the 53rd minute, Sam Austin turning provider after scoring the opener. Just three minutes later, Charley Kendall added a third, further solidifying Southend’s control of the match.

In an attempt to shift the momentum, Gateshead manager Alun Armstrong made a series of substitutions. Max Sheaf was introduced at the start of the second half, followed shortly after by Kyle Hurst, Kain Adom, and Fenton John, as the manager sought to inject fresh energy and tactical adjustments. However, these changes were unable to halt Southend’s momentum, and the visitors remained firmly in command.

Southend manager Kevin Maher also utilised tactical substitutions, bringing on Andy Dallas and Tom Hopper in the 69th minute, followed by Jack Bridge and James Morton in the 80th minute, to manage the game and inject fresh legs into the team. Nathan Ralph received a yellow card for Southend in the 39th minute, while Max Sheaf was booked for Gateshead in added time.

With this victory, Southend United significantly improve their position in the league table, securing a valuable three points. The Shrimpers now sit comfortably in a play-off quarter-final place. Gateshead, however, will be left to reflect on missed opportunities, as they miss out on the last play-off spot, needing a win to secure their place. This result leaves them further down the table, highlighting the need for a swift response in their upcoming fixtures.
