Woking 1-0 AFC Fylde

Woking clinched a hard-fought victory against AFC Fylde at the Laithwaite Community Stadium in a match characterised by its intensity and tactical adjustments, rather than a glut of goals. Referee Sam Mulhall issued six yellow cards throughout the contest, reflecting the combative nature of the encounter.

The first half was a cautious affair, with both sides struggling to penetrate well-organised defences. AFC Fylde’s Danny Ormerod and Ethan Mitchell both received yellow cards before half-time, suggesting a deliberate effort to disrupt Woking’s flow. Oluwarotimi Odusina also went into the referee’s book for Woking shortly before the interval. Despite promising build-up play from both teams, neither managed to deliver a decisive pass or shot to seriously test the goalkeepers.

The second half began with a slightly increased tempo, as Woking emerged with renewed intent. However, the physical nature of the game persisted, with Olatunji Akinola and Will Hugill both receiving yellow cards early in the half. AFC Fylde made the first substitution of the match in the 59th minute, introducing Jonathan Ustabasi in place of Danny Ormerod in a tactical switch. Woking responded shortly after, replacing Aiden O’Brien with Josh Osude.

The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute when Dale Gorman scored for Woking, assisted by Inih Effiong, much to the delight of the home supporters. This goal prompted further changes from AFC Fylde, with Gavin Massey replacing Will Hugill just prior to the goal and Emeka Obi coming on for Owen Evans shortly afterwards. Woking also made a substitution, bringing on Sam Ashford for Lewis Walker, aiming to inject fresh impetus into their attack.

In the closing stages, AFC Fylde desperately sought an equaliser, adopting a more attacking approach. They made a final substitution in the 85th minute, replacing Ashley Boatswain with Lincoln McFayden. However, Woking remained resolute in defence, with Chinwike Okoli receiving a late yellow card as they fought to protect their lead. Ultimately, Woking successfully defended their advantage to secure a valuable three points.

This victory sees Woking move slightly upwards in the National League standings. While a promotion challenge appears unlikely, they will be relieved to create further distance between themselves and the relegation zone. For AFC Fylde, this defeat exacerbates their struggles, leaving them near the foot of the table and in urgent need of points to avoid relegation.
