Sutton United rescued a point against Southend United at the VBS Community Stadium, courtesy of a late equaliser from substitute Ashley Nadesan, after Ben Goodliffe’s first-half goal had given the visitors the lead.
The first half was characterised by a cautious approach from both teams, with clear-cut chances at a premium. Southend, under the management of Kevin Maher, gradually asserted themselves, and their mounting pressure culminated in Ben Goodliffe scoring in the 32nd minute.
Sutton manager Steve Morison reacted to falling behind by introducing Ashley Nadesan for Kain Adom in the 51st minute, a tactical change intended to invigorate the attack. Further substitutions followed in the 68th minute, with Jack Wadham and Nana Boateng replacing other players as Sutton searched for a way back into the match.
Southend responded with a triple substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on Oliver Coker, Jack Bridge, and Cavanagh Miley in an attempt to solidify their midfield and protect their narrow advantage. As time wore on, the game became increasingly fragmented, punctuated by a series of late yellow cards. Keenan Appiah-Forson and Cavanagh Miley of Southend, and Lewis Simper of Sutton, all received cautions, reflecting the escalating tension on the pitch.
As the match moved into added time, Southend appeared on course to secure a valuable three points. However, Sutton’s sustained pressure ultimately paid dividends in the 94th minute when Nadesan, who had been introduced as a substitute, scored, much to the delight of the home supporters.
The draw leaves Sutton United in 14th position with 52 points, while Southend United remain in 9th place with 60 points, continuing their pursuit of a play-off berth.
