Boston United produced a stunning second-half display to emphatically defeat Southend United 3-0 at the Jakemans Community Stadium, overturning the form book in impressive fashion. A cagey first half, notable only for a yellow card shown to Boston’s Jimmy Knowles for a foul in the 41st minute, offered little hint of the drama that would unfold after the break.
The second half was a different story entirely. Frankie Maguire broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, giving Boston the lead with an assist from Knowles. The Pilgrims’ momentum built rapidly, and just seven minutes later, Knowles turned goalscorer, netting Boston’s second, assisted by Cameron Green. The hour mark brought a flurry of substitutions as both teams adjusted their strategies. Southend brought on Charley Kendall for Noor Husin in the 67th minute, while Boston’s Jai Rowe received a yellow card for a foul in the 64th minute. Having opened the scoring, Maguire was replaced by Greg Sloggett for Boston in the 78th minute. Southend then responded with a double substitution, introducing Josh Walker and Cavanagh Miley for James Morton and Tom Hopper respectively. Zak Mills capped off a superb afternoon for the home side, making it 3-0 in the 79th minute before picking up a yellow card himself for a foul in the 86th minute. Boston made further changes in the closing stages: Knowles, who had been instrumental in the victory with a goal and an assist, was replaced by Keaton Ward, Dylan Hill made way for Olly Green, and finally, Jacob Hazel was substituted for Adam Marriott.
The comprehensive second-half victory earned Boston United a crucial three points, lifting them to 21st in the National League table with 40 points. Southend, meanwhile, remain on 56 points, dropping to 9th. Having beaten Boston 2-0 earlier in the season, Southend came into the match with the superior head-to-head record. This emphatic result for Boston, however, served as a stark reminder of the National League’s unpredictable nature.
