Tamworth strengthened their recent resurgence with a vital 2-0 away victory against Gateshead at the Gateshead International Stadium, extending their unbeaten run to six matches. While not a high-scoring encounter, Tamworth’s clinical finishing proved the difference against a Gateshead side struggling to find their form.
The opening half was a tight, cagey affair, with neither side able to carve out any clear-cut opportunities. Defences were on top, and the only moment of note was a yellow card issued to Tamworth’s Tom Tonks for a foul in the 24th minute. The teams went into the break goalless, leaving the match finely poised.
The second half, however, saw Tamworth seize control. The breakthrough came in the 60th minute, courtesy of a well-taken goal by Dan Creaney. Callum Cockerill-Mollett’s incisive pass unlocked the Gateshead defence, allowing Creaney to finish with aplomb. The goal spurred Gateshead into action, and manager Carl Magnay responded immediately, substituting Jack Roles for Tyrelle Newton just a minute later.
Despite Gateshead’s increased urgency, Tamworth remained resolute at the back and dangerous on the break. They doubled their advantage in the 78th minute with a flowing move culminating in Thomas McGlinchey finding the net, assisted by Creaney.
With a two-goal cushion, Tamworth looked to manage the game, replacing the influential Creaney with Danny Waldron shortly after the second goal. Both sides made further substitutions in the closing stages, but the scoreline remained unchanged.
The victory sees Tamworth climb the National League table to 10th position on 54 points, leapfrogging several teams in the process. Their impressive form stands in stark contrast to Gateshead, who remain in 6th place on 60 points but are now winless in their last six matches. This result extends Tamworth’s recent head-to-head dominance over Gateshead to two wins from their last two meetings.
