A goalless draw played out under the lights at The Shay Stadium saw FC Halifax Town and Sutton United share the spoils in a tight, tactical encounter. Chances were few and far between as both sides cancelled each other out in a match punctuated by substitutions and yellow cards.
The opening 45 minutes offered little in the way of goalmouth action. Halifax attempted to dictate the tempo through midfield, but Sutton’s resolute defence held firm, limiting the hosts’ progress. Sutton, in turn, looked to exploit any opportunities on the break, but their counter-attacking forays were similarly stifled by a well-organised Halifax backline. While both teams showed flashes of attacking intent, neither could carve out a clear opening.
The second half witnessed a flurry of activity from the benches as both managers sought to find a winning formula. Halifax manager introduced Tom Pugh in place of Billy Waters, followed by Max Wright replacing Jack Jenkins, aiming to inject fresh impetus into their attack. Sutton responded with their own tactical switches, bringing on Nana Boateng for Lewis Simper and Jeremy Sivi for Ryan Jackson to reinforce their midfield.
Despite the changes, the deadlock remained unbroken. While the pace of the game increased, clear-cut chances remained at a premium. The match became increasingly fragmented as a series of fouls disrupted the flow, resulting in yellow cards for Halifax’s Jack Evans and substitute Max Wright, and for Sutton’s Siju Odelusi and Besart Topalloj.
Ultimately, neither side could find the breakthrough, and the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The result sees Halifax drop one place to 11th in the National League table, while Sutton remain in 7th. This was the first meeting between the two sides in three seasons.
