Oldham Athletic secured a thrilling 3-1 victory over Sutton United at the VBS Community Stadium in a pulsating National League encounter. The Latics drew first blood in the 18th minute when Mike Fondop-Talum, expertly positioned, finished off a precise pass from Mark Kitching to give the visitors an early lead. Sutton, spurred on by their home support, responded by pressing for an equaliser, but Oldham’s defence held firm. A tactical switch from Sutton saw Siju Odelusi replace Lewis Simper before half-time, signalling a desire for greater attacking threat.
The second half began with an immediate response from the hosts. Just two minutes after the restart, Will Davies levelled the scores, sparking celebrations amongst the Sutton faithful. However, their joy was short-lived. Only five minutes later, Oldham regained their advantage as Charlie Raglan headed home from a Tom Conlon assist. The match became increasingly frenetic, with both teams searching for the decisive goal. As the tension mounted, yellow cards were shown to Sutton’s Will Sutton, Chinwike Okoli, and Ashley Nadesan. In the 91st minute, substitute James Norwood sealed the victory for Oldham, converting a Jake Caprice assist to make it 3-1 and spark jubilant scenes amongst the travelling supporters. Even a late booking for Norwood for a rash challenge couldn’t dampen the Oldham celebrations.
The victory propels Oldham Athletic to fifth in the National League table, while Sutton United drop to 13th. After a three-season absence from league meetings between the two sides, this match will undoubtedly be remembered for its dramatic swings in momentum and Oldham’s clinical finishing.
