A hard-fought contest at Grosvenor Vale saw Wealdstone secure a vital 1-0 victory against AFC Fylde, providing a welcome reprieve for the struggling home side. A first-half goal proved decisive in a match characterised by tactical adjustments from both teams.
The crucial breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute. A flowing Wealdstone move culminated in Max Kretzschmar delivering a pinpoint pass to Henry Sandat, who coolly slotted the ball past the Fylde goalkeeper, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst the home supporters. Stung by the early concession, Fylde responded by increasing the pressure on the Wealdstone defence, but the Stones held firm, limiting the visitors to only half-chances.
As the first half progressed, the game became increasingly fragmented, with a booking for Wealdstone’s Yacouba Traore for a rash challenge adding to the stop-start nature of the play. Shortly before half-time, Traore was replaced by Christian Scott, perhaps as a consequence of his earlier caution. Wealdstone manager also opted for a change up front, withdrawing goalscorer Sandat for Alex Dyer, suggesting a more cautious approach for the second period.
The second half witnessed a flurry of substitutions from both sides. Early on, Kretzschmar, the provider for Wealdstone’s goal, was replaced by Anthony Georgiou. Fylde manager Chris Beech also looked to change the dynamic of the game, introducing Joe Riley, Offrande Zanzala, and Bryce Hosannah in quick succession to bolster his midfield and attack. Wealdstone responded by bringing on Todd Miller to add further resilience to their midfield.
Despite Fylde’s renewed efforts, Wealdstone’s defence remained resolute, repelling wave after wave of attacks. Late yellow cards for Fylde’s Riley and Emeka Obi underlined the visitors’ growing frustration. As the match entered its closing stages, Fylde committed men forward in a desperate search for an equaliser, but Wealdstone stood firm to secure a crucial three points.
The victory lifts Wealdstone to 22nd in the National League, while AFC Fylde drop to 18th. While Fylde had triumphed in their previous two encounters, scoring three goals across those matches, Wealdstone maintained their 100% winning record against the Coasters at Grosvenor Vale.
